Welcome to the sisterhood! Temple Concord has a chapter of Women of Reform Judaism, a national organization under the umbrella of the Union of Reform Judaism.

Membership

Annual dues are just $36 for a regular membership, $55 for an enhanced membership (which includes a canvas tote bag and a 10% discount in the Temple gift shop) and $18 for seniors/students [link to membership form].

Mission

The purpose of this organization shall be:

1. To advance the cause of Judaism by cooperating with Temple Society of Concord, its religious school, the Jewish community, and the community at large;

2. To provide women the opportunity to participate in religious, social, and educational activities;

3. To create and nurture a social network;

4. To aid in the promotion of the program of the National Women of Reform Judaism Organization’s agenda and purpose.

Monthly/Regular Activities

  • Monthly meeting held on Sunday mornings at Temple Concord, usually 9:45 – 11:45. Refreshments are always served and there is always time for visiting and schmoozing. There is also a program or presentation. Anyone interested in the WRJ is welcome to attend.
  • Bake cookies for the Oneg Shabbat each Friday morning in the Temple kitchen.
  • Daytime Mah Jongg game on Mondays at 1:30 at the Nottingham
  • Quarterly salons (discussion groups) based on materials from Lilith magazine
  • Periodic movie nights and dinner nights

Annual activities

  • Support the Temple religious school. For example, this past year we collected school and art supplies, held a restaurant fundraiser, and hosted a monthly parent/teacher breakfast
  • Community Service Award ($250) presented to a deserving Confirmation Class student
  • Member brunch in the fall
  • Honey sale prior to Rosh Hashanah (funds benefit religious school)
  • Co-sponsor the Rosh Hashanah Oneg Yom Tov
  • Sponsor a congregational Break-the-Fast after the final Yom Kippur service
  • Provide Hamentaschen for the annual Temple Purim Party
  • Sisterhood Shabbat service (preceded by potluck dinner) in the spring
  • Concord Kids' Sale; a community rummage sale with clothing and other items for children ages 0-12

Other Ways WRJ is involved in the Congregation

  • Co-presidents are voting members of the Temple Board of Trustees and attend monthly BOT meetings and semi-annual BOT retreats.
  • Representative from WRJ sits on the Temple Membership Committee
  • Representative from WRJ sits on the Temple Marketing and Communications Committee
  • Representative from WRJ sits on the Temple’s Development Committee

In addition to their connection to WRJ, our members serve the larger congregation. For instance:

  • WRJ member sits on the Temple Congregational Learning Task Force
  • WRJ member sits on the Temple Social Action Committee
  • WRJ member sits on the Temple Memorial Committee
  • WRJ member heads the Temple combined Board of Education/Youth Commission
