Mitkadem - Our New Hebrew Program for 5769
Using new Hebrew teaching materials is always a challenge, but one that both our students and teachers have embraced this year. The Mitkadem program, developed by URJ for congregational Hebrew schools, concentrates on Hebrew for prayer and ritual. It is designed to provide opportunity for each student to learn, develop skills and pride, and to feel part of the larger Jewish community. The materials and activities of Mitkadem operate in a traditional classroom with all students aiming to complete the same work. The program, however, was conceived to allow for students to work at their own pace. Motivated and knowledgeable students can proceed quickly through the material. Students who have more difficulty with Hebrew and/or are absent frequently can pick up where they left off. They may not cover as much material, but should be grounded in what they do accomplish and have the opportunity to work beyond the classroom with clearly presented lessons that can be done independently. Students are able to listen on line for practice.
Our teachers have had fun with Mitkadem, filling our classrooms with the sights and sounds of Hebrew. They become a resource and facilitator for student’s self-directed Hebrew learning. Parents as always, are welcome learning partners. Our wish is for students to learn that Hebrew is part of a Judaism that involves lifelong learning, worship and ritual.
