What Is Reform Judaism?
Throughout history, the Jewish people have remained deeply connected to tradition while engaging meaningfully with the world around them. From its inception, Reform Judaism has recognized that a Judaism locked in the past becomes a relic. Instead, Reform Judaism keeps our faith alive by blending innovation with tradition, embracing diversity while celebrating shared values, and fostering belief alongside healthy questioning. It encourages reverence for sacred texts while also welcoming critical thought and scholarship.
Reform Judaism affirms the core pillars of Jewish life—God, Torah, and Israel—while honoring the broad range of beliefs and practices within our movement. We believe every human being is created in the image of God and that we are called to partner with God in the ongoing work of tikkun olam, repairing the world. This commitment to justice, compassion, and human dignity is central to who we are.
We view the Torah as the foundation of Jewish life: an inspired and evolving document that reflects our enduring relationship with God and guides us in responding to both timeless spiritual questions and the pressing issues of contemporary life.
In addition to our dedication to tradition and social justice, Reform Judaism is defined by several key principles:
-
Inclusion: Since 1978, the Reform Movement has actively welcomed Jews-by-choice and interfaith families, encouraging their full participation in Jewish life. We recognize as Jewish any child raised in the Jewish faith, whether born to a Jewish mother or father.
-
Gender Equality: Reform Judaism was the first movement to ordain women rabbis, invest female cantors, and support women in synagogue leadership at every level.
-
LGBTQ+ Inclusion: We are committed to the full equality and participation of LGBTQ+ individuals in both synagogue life and society as a whole.
Reform Judaism is a living, evolving faith—one that honors our heritage while responding to the needs and realities of today’s world.
